Innovation Looking to the future… today

Working together to deliver innovative solutions for the fresh produce industry.

#

Innovation is key to the food industry. It helps us to grow and tackle key challenges

“One clear message is that business as usual is not an option. Major transformations of agricultural systems, rural economies and natural resource management are needed” – FAO, 2017.

We agree that doing nothing is not an option. Innovation and technology are essential to economic and environmentally sustainable food production for this generation and for future generations.

Our Purpose:

Reduce food and energy waste

At the start of this Century, global food loss and waste amount to between one-third and one-half of all food produced.

Increase marketable yield

Crop variability within a field decreases marketable yield. Understanding and reducing the field variability of a crop will yield higher returns for the supply chain.

Enhance produce quality

Understanding your crop, looking after it during harvest, storage and processing will prevent waste and increase the value of the crop.

Add value to the business

We are experts in extracting new compounds from crop residues and outgrade materials as a source of fuel or nutritional ingredient in the food supply chain.

What we do We create innovative Agri-tech solutions

Machine learning

Machine learning

We use machine learning to interpret high volume data from visual, electromagnetic, satellite and environmental sensors to identify significant factors which can impact or promote crop performance, marketable yield, and waste

Product development

Product development

Create a product from concept through to delivery, undertaking the manufacture, product support and ongoing development

Insight

Insight

We create actionable intelligence from understanding of data and production context

Data science

Data science

Our data scientists identify key patterns and trends in crop data to provide agronomic insights

Software development

Software development

We have web, cloud and mobile-based development teams to create technological tools for data collection, analysis and presentation

Plant science

Plant science

Our in house experts in plant science understand crop responses and interactions with their environment to better understand how to maximise crop value

Prototype design and build

Prototype design and build

We design and fabricate electronic, mechanical, sensor, data collection, control and robotic systems

Project management

Project management

Our management teams are experienced at delivering small and large scale projects both commercially and public-funded. We work successfully with a wide range of collaborators, both industry and academic

Sensor development

Sensor development

We create vision and imaging, environmental, gas and chemical and electromagnetic sensors

Technology for today’s farmers Embracing challenges to deliver solutions within the fresh produce industry, from field to fork

B-hive work with a range of customers to understand the specific challenges they face, and develop innovative solutions to solve these issues. Our previous experience ranges from in-field solutions to storage systems, to post-processing value extraction.

We aim to pull technology from industry challenges, rather than push them onto end users.

Please get in touch if you have an industry challenge you would like to discuss.

We build through collaboration

The company has been a great success across many projects, working with several collaborators, partners and clients across the industry. Taking projects from concept through to commercial product.

We take on private, commercially commissioned, R&D projects, as well as collaborating with partners in funded projects (such as those from Innovate UK).

Our collaborators include:

Meet the team

The B-hive team is full of bright-minded individuals each having a key role in the business. Expertise ranges from machine learning, product development, data science, software development and project management. We pride ourselves in out of the box thinking, bringing new ideas and concepts from other industries into agriculture.

The use of drones in agriculture

Getting vast amounts of information of crop growth and health is important in the move to precision agriculture - but how do drones help? B-hive Innovations’ local expert has produced a quick guide.

All you need to know about wireworm

A wireworm infestation can devastate agricultural crops with potatoes being particularly at risk. Wireworm numbers have been increasing for years – join B-hive’s local expert, Rebekah Neill, to find out all about wireworms - what they are, why they are such a problem and our armoury of tools to combat them.
